9 inbound lead generation tips with twitterAre you using Twitter as a revene-generation channel in your social media marketing process? Many SMB companies have adopted LinkedIn and Facebook as cornerstones of their social media marketing process, but overlook Twitter's revenue-generation potential. While we don't dispute the value of metrics like engagement and brand promotion, we're like most SMB companies - we use Twitter primarily for revenue generation. It's all about generating leads and closing business! Here are 9 tips to consider as you build a Twitter revenue generation channel.

Tip 1 - use keywords in your Twitter bio

Twitter allows you 160 characters in the bio that appears on your profile page - take advantage of them! Use keywords that your ideal customer would use to describe your business. Use these keywords to write an attention-grabbing bio that will entice visitors to learn more about you and follow you.

Tip 2 - leave room in your tweets for your followers to retweet them

While Twitter allows you 140 characters in your tweets, keep them less than 120 characters. Why? So that others may retweet them. When someone shares your tweet via "rt @JohnMBeveridge", they will use approximately 20 characters and your SEO-friendly keywords might get lost in the retweet. Another reason to keep your tweets shorter is that data shows that 120-130 character tweets have the highest click through rates.

Tip 3 - use Twitter to generate inbound links to your website

Google registers the value of the authority of the Twitter profile posting content and correlates it with the value of the link being posted. So if your post is re-tweeted by someone with a large Twitter following, search engines will reward the URL of the link being retweeted. Creating content that influencers find re-tweetable will have a positive impact on your website SEO.

Tip 4 - follow your customers and prospects on Twitter

The obvious benefit of following your customers and prospects on Twitter is that you can monitor what they're saying and what they value. Make an effort to share their content with retweets and they will notice you and appreciate your sharing their content. Not a bad place to start a conversation.

How To Grow Your SMB Company With Twitter

Tip 5 - share your landing pages and blog posts using the 10:4:1 rule

It's okay to share your landing pages and blog posts on Twitter. After all, that's why most SMB companies are using Twitter. But don't overdo it. There's nothing worth than tweeting out an unending stream of spammy sales messages. A good rule of thumb is to use the 10:4:1 rule. For every 15 tweets, tweet 4 blog posts and 1 landing page. For the other 10 tweets, tweet out other people's content that your followers would find interesting. Think about tweeting out content from your customers, prospects and industry influencers - it could help in more ways than one!

Tip 6 - respond to questions with links to your landing pages and blog posts

There is absolutely nothing wrong with replying to questions on Twitter with a helpful landing page link. In fact, answering a question with a few words and pointing them to a solution often gives your company greater credibility and authority.

Tip 7 - use hashtags

Don't randomly use hashtags! In order for hashtags to be effective, they have to be integrated with a marketing campaign. For example, if you're hosting an event, create a hashtag so attendees can tweet about your event. You can aggregate these tweets as a source of potential leads.

Tip 8 - use an analytics tool

To measure the effectiveness of your Twitter marketing in driving traffic to your blog and landing pages, you need to use an analytics tool like Google Analytics or HubSpot. While both will show the amount of traffic coming to your site from Twitter, a paid tool like HubSpot integrates with your other marketing assets and can be integrated with your CRM for closed-loop analytics.

Tip 9 - use social media software to manage your social media marketing process

Social media software like HubSpot or HootSuite will make your social media marketing process more effective. You can schedule your tweets in advance, analyze which tweets have the highest click through rates and monitor what people are saying about your company and industry on Twitter. HubSpot is an integrated, all-in-one inbound marketing software product. HootSuite is an affordable, specialized social media software product - the professional version is available for $9.99 per month.

If you're not using Twitter to drive revenue, there's no time like now to get started. Integrate Twitter into your sales and marketing process, you won't be sorry!
